A reflection on clarity, lineage, and direction within the unfolding of spring

清明 (Qingming)
In 2026, Qingming (清明) falls on Sunday, 5 April, with the public holiday in mainland China observed from 4–6 April.
This year’s Qingming sits at a rare intersection: an ancient solar-term ancestor rite unfolding within a Fire Horse year (丙午) — a “double fire” combination that appears only once every 60 years.
It is a moment where seasonal clarity, ancestral continuity, and intensified movement meet.
What is Qingming?
Qingming first appears not as a festival, but as one of the 24 solar terms.
It marks the moment when the sun reaches 15° celestial longitude, approximately 15 days after the Spring Equinox.
Classical descriptions state:
“When all things arrive here, they all become grand, equal, pure, and clear.” (万物至此,皆洁齐而清明)
At this stage:
winter’s yin has largely retreated
yangqi rises outward
growth becomes visible and stable.
Qingming is not the beginning of movement.
It is the moment where movement begins to take direction.
Qingming as a Hinge in the Year
Chinese agricultural culture ties concrete action to this moment:
“Around Qingming, plant melons and beans.” (清明前后,点瓜种豆)
This reflects a deeper principle:
action must follow timing.
Later interpretations of the solar terms describe them as a system for:
aligning with the circulation of yin and yang
acting according to the “mandates of heaven and time”
expressing the unity of heaven and human beings (天人合一)
Qingming therefore functions as a turning point in the yearly cycle — where emergence gives way to orientation and order.
From Solar Term to Festival
Historically, Qingming only gradually became a festival.
During the Tang dynasty, it remained primarily a seasonal marker, closely associated with the Cold Food Festival (寒食节), which commemorates Jie Zitui and imposed a ban on fire and hot food.
Between the Northern and Southern Song periods, several changes occurred:
the strict Cold Food fire ban lost practical relevance
lineage culture and grave visitation increased
spring outings became socially important.
Over time, these elements merged.
By the Qing dynasty, Cold Food was largely absorbed, and Qingming became the central festival of ancestor remembrance and spring renewal.
What Happens at Qingming
Across China, Qingming retains a simple and physical structure.
Tomb Maintenance (扫墓、培土)
clearing weeds
cleaning tombstones
renewing soil
Offerings (献供)
cooked dishes
fruit, tea, and wine
sometimes seasonal foods such as qingtuan
Incense and Paper Burning and Bowing (焚香、烧纸、叩拜)
lighting incense and candles

kneeling and bowing while acknowledging ancestors
Return and Movement

returning quietly to daily life
Modern Adaptations
In urban contexts, practices have evolved:
cemetery parks replace rural burial sites
“cloud tomb sweeping” allows remote participation
“green Qingming” promotes flowers and tree planting over burning
Lineage and the Inner Logic of Qingming
Anthropological studies describe Qingming as one of the most representative ritual events of Chinese lineage culture.
It functions on several levels:
Lineage Boundary
Those who gather define who belongs.
Vertical Connection
Ancestors are acknowledged as active influences.
Horizontal Transmission
Values such as filial piety (孝道) are embodied and passed on.
Qingming is therefore not symbolic.
It actively recreates the lineage each year.
Qingming in a Taoist Perspective
Although Qingming originates in state and clan ritual, it unfolds within a worldview later articulated by Taoism:
qi circulation
yinyang transformation
continuity between visible and invisible realms.
Three resonances stand out:
Unity of Heaven and Human (天人合一)
Acting in alignment with seasonal timing.
Yinyang Balance
Visiting graves expresses yin; spring movement expresses yang.
Naturalness (自然)
Simple, grounded practices rather than excessive ritual.
The Three Phases of Qingming (三候)
Traditional seasonal science divides Qingming into three phases:
桐始华 — the tong-tree's flowering begins
田鼠化为鴽 — vole's transform into ru-birds (quail-like bird) (their activity increases)
虹始见 — rainbows start to be observed
These reflect a progression from manifestation to movement to integration.
Qingming is therefore clarity within transformation.
Folk Practices and Seasonal Expression
Beyond cleaning and paying respect to the grave, Qingming includes:
kite flying (symbolic release of burdens)
willow branches (protection and renewal)
swings and games (activating the body)
tree planting (linking ancestors and future life)
These practices express movement, health, and renewal, balancing the inward aspect of remembrance.
Qingming 2026 — Fire Horse Context
The year 2026 is a Fire Horse year (丙午).
This combination intensifies:
movement
expression
emotional energy
Traditionally, Qingming is not tied to zodiac cycles. However, contemporary interpretations apply this layer.
From a Taoist perspective, this suggests:
rising yang is amplified
fire becomes more active
Without clarity, energy disperses. With clarity, movement becomes directed.
Qingming becomes especially relevant in this context.
Qingming as Practice
Qingming invites not more effort, but clarification.

Qingming includes grief and family harmony, movement, and social activity.
These are not contradictory.
They create emotional circulation.
Qingming is therefore life reaffirmed through remembrance.
